Series Synopsis

Be it human, elf, halfling, angel, or beastman, everyone from every species has a few basic needs, such a water, food, and, some might argue most importantly, sex.

But like no two creatures are the same, there is no one type of sex that is going to satisfy everyone. However, with so much variety in the world, it can be difficult for someone to fulfill their desires. What could help is some information, a guide, or, perhaps, a review.

Quickly growing in popularity is a well-written and detailed review series compiled by a group of adventurers who have traveled across the land and who have evaluated the various brothels and sexual establishments out there. And if there is one thing you can be sure of, anything goes with the.

Series Overview

Long time readers of this site will notice the change. Regardless of the series, genre, or, really, anything, I try to give you a thorough account of an anime’s best and worst aspects. But now and then, something comes along that is so heavily targeted to a specific type of audience, any words of praise or critique become meaningless. That doesn’t mean a show doesn’t have faults or strengths; there is simply a single, solitary goal that has nothing to do with the story, characters, atmosphere, or animation.

Interspecies Reviewers is one such series.

Unless you are someone like me who watches everything, you should go into this show knowing full well what to expect. And if you don’t, boy are you in for a surprise.

Interspecies Reviewers is about a group of adventurers who are on a mission to have sex with every intelligent species. After each “outing,” the adventurers write a review of their experience, informing others if they think a particular species is worth spending a night with. These reviews go into extreme detail and are always occupied by a play-by-play flashback. To say this show was explicit would be an understatement.

Here at LofZOdyssey Anime Reviews, the one type of anime I will not cover is hentai (porn). That then begs the question: Where is the line between an ecchi (a series with heavily sexualized content) and straight-up porn? Interspecies Reviewers lies in a gray area. The only reason I am not calling this soft-core hentai is because a censored version of this show exists.

For full transparency, I watched the uncensored version. However, out of curiosity, after a rather intense – couple – of “exchanges,” I had to see what the hell was shown in the censored series. If you do choose to go down the censored route, when you get to a segment that is completely blacked out and you’re left with only the audio, know this:

That is a legitimate censor. The black screen was not a design choice. The scene was filmed, and it was graphic.

With all that said, it would be wrong of me to overlook how well-made Interspecies Reviewers was. And that’s not me saying it was well-made for an ecchi. No, this was a competently put-together series from the same studio that gave us Rokka no Yuusha and Joshikousei no Mudazukai. The animation was solid, there was a lot of humor, and the characters, although sleazy as all hell, were quite fun.

What this series can’t be accused of is a lack of imagination.

Now, was it in poor taste to have the central concept of this show being evaluating the f@#$ability of women from various species? I mean, yeah. Although I will add that Interspecies Reviewers was surprisingly inclusive – granted, to an unsatisfying degree – remember, this is a sexual fantasy anime. Therefore, you are choosing to watch it for that reason, and that reason alone. The same was true for me; no one told me I had to review this. The choice was mine.

Considering my own views on sex, as a rule of thumb, so long as all parties involved consent to the act – with consent meaning everyone is WILLING, NOT UNDER ANY OUTSIDE PRESSURE, OF SOUND MIND, AND OF LEGAL AGE – I really don’t care what you are into. To Interspecies Reviewers’ credit, it fell very much within that definition of mine. Not once did I feel this show crossed a line.

Let me end this post by reiterating: If you are looking for a meaningful story with complex characters and profound, thought-provoking moments, you could not be in a more wrong place.

Final Thoughts

There is no way for me to fully explain what you are getting into with this series, aside from pictures of some of this show’s more intense moments. And I am not going to do that.

This could have been a cheap excuse to have insane sexy-times in a fantastical setting. Although there were insane sexy-times in a fantastical setting, this series wasn’t cheap. There was talent behind this one. That said, I don’t blame you if you think this show might be a tad much.

I won’t be suggesting whether you should watch Interspecies Reviewers or not. Please exercise your own discretion.

But these are just my thoughts. What are yours? Have you seen this series? How would you advise Interspecies Reviewers? Leave a comment down below because I would love to hear what you have to say.

  1. While I also avoid hentai, I really enjoyed this show and felt downright betrayed when Funimation stopped airing it after only 3 episodes. Furthermore, I agree that this was a well-crafted show that did yeoman’s work in covering its chosen subject matter. Personally, I look forward to purchasing the unedited version and adding it to my anime library.

  2. kind of ignores the subtle world building that’s mentioned through out the series and even then the sex scenes were nothing hardcore. in fact compared to actual hentai and other anime that had actual sex scenes it was soft and barely showed movements. as for how interspecies reviewers does not fall into hentai that has to do with the fact they avoid that line of genital showing and if you were to look and compare this to shinmai maou, masou gakuen, yosuga no sora, and even ikkitousen’s few sex scenes in the first 2 seasons Ishuzoku reviewers while pushed a few more boundaries in where lewd ecchi anime could go in the future especially considering what’s coming in the next 2 seasons I don’t think they’re as graphic as most make it sound especially funimation and their track record of dubbing lewd anime that do a lot more “risque” scenarios by comparison.

while Ishuzoku reviewers may not have a direction in terms of story it does have a world building element that is right there provided you pay attention to what’s being said, and there’s some actual commentary in here and there that can relate to the actual business of prostitution where you are getting a perspective that you likely will never see others talk about or at least put it in a way on what if stopped making it illegal and made it legal but you are still accountable for what happens afterward such as cheating on your spouse then it’s still on you and all that personal responsibility stuff.

so overall this anime is far from the worst thing ever and passione certainly did take risks that far as people and audiences were concerned paid off for them. whether a season 2 happens or not is debatable but this was an anime where they definitely had a lot of fun in making happen.
